Habit Goal: Decouple Tracking Logic from Goal Units

TLDR;

If we treat the Input Method as a UI preference and the Unit as a data label, we stop the "Rejected" cycle of Making reworking habits easier and give users the flexibility they’ve been voting for in these Feature Requests:

Proposal:

This request is the "missing link" for several high-priority items. The current "conundrum" is that the UI forces a choice between Tracking Method (Timer vs. Counter) by masking it as a Unit Choice (Min vs. Times).

To solve this and unify the Habit Type Change and Unit Modification requests, I suggest a 3-pillar UI overhaul:

1. Decouple "Interaction Style" from "Unit" Instead of the "Times" vs. "Min" split, let the user select their Goal Unit (Minutes, Liters, Calories, or CUSTOM UNIT etc.) and then choose their Input Method:

  • The Timer: For duration-based flow.

  • The Counter (+/-): For incremental progress.

  • Why? Someone might want to track "30 Minutes" but log it in 5-minute manual increments rather than using a live timer. (this is ONE of my personal use cases)

2. Replace Scrollers with Manual Input Fields As noted in Custom Goal Inputs, and possibly other requests that I was not searching for, the 1–1000 scroller is an artificial friction point. Replacing this with a text field (number pad) allows for precise goals like "1,750 calories" or "8,000 steps" instantly, satisfying high-precision users.

3. The "Data Migration" Modal (The Workaround) The technical blocker for changing units is often "incompatible data." If a user changes a unit/type after logging history:

  • Warning Modal: "Changing your tracking method will reset existing progress data for this habit to ensure chart accuracy. Proceed?"

  • Workaround: Implement the Duplicate Habit feature immediately. This allows users to "clone" their settings (including multiple custom reminders and other fine tuning - my use case has TEN alarm/Reminders) into a new habit with a different unit, without the manual "UX nightmare" of rebuilding from scratch.

Again just to pull out a quick workaround solution here… which instantly solves several of these issues…

Create a DUPLICATE HABIT feature where upon clicking, a user immediately enters the new habit creation workflow, where they could adjust the tracking method before completing the creation of this as a new habit.

Goal: Allow changing goal from minutes to times

In editing a habit, allow us to change the goal of the habit from minutes to how many times a day or so. Right now, there’s no way to change the goal of the habit if we change our mind on how we want to accomplish that goal. Thanks.

      Hi!

When you create a habit, you can choose to create a custom one.

When setting the habit goal, choose "time” as the based unit, and you can customize the lable freely.

Later, you can change the label to any unit.

However, there is one thing to note about: the new label will applied to the old data in the progress view.

Habit settings: Enable habit type change

I created a positive habit, but now I realize that it makes more sense to reword it as a negative habit I’d like to quit. I can rename it, but there is no option to change the type. I don’t want to create a new habit, because I already logged more than a year there and don’t want to lose my records.

      Hi!

We totally get your concern about keeping all that awesome tracking history while wanting to switch your habit from positive to negative. After a year of logging, that's valuable data you don't want to lose!

Right now, our app handles good habits and bad habits as separate systems. This is because tracking "doing something good" works differently than tracking "avoiding something bad" - both in how we measure it and the psychology behind it. That's why there's no simple switch button in the app.

I'm adding your feedback to help us prioritize things for future updates! Thanks for sticking with Habitify for over a year - that's amazing consistency!

In that case I would like to be able to manually edit records of the habit. Now I can add a new bad habit that started a year ago, but I can’t edit records that are more than a month ago from now.

It would be good to be able to have control over my data.

On Journal view, you can view back last 30 days at most.

Instead, to log for further day, you can open the current day's view → swipe habit right and choose Log Progress → adjust the date & time and enter the log value.

It is not possible to log progress for the negative habit.

You can’t swipe right bad habits

Oh, so is it a habit with goal to quit?

              then, there is another way:

              • tap on your habit to open the calendar view

              • tap on 3-dot button on the top right corner and choose log progress

              • choose a date and log a value

That's how you update a failed status for the habit on the date in the past.

Thanks, looks like this option can work.

But it doesn’t break the streak if I log failed status in the past. I still see my perfect streak and no failures in calendar view.

Habit Settings: Ability to Change the Unit of a Habit After Creation

The option to change the unit of a habit after it has been created would be highly useful.

    • Currently, if the wrong unit is selected (e.g., minutes instead of hours), the habit must be recreated.

    • Allowing the unit to be updated would save time and prevent data loss.

    • Example: A habit set as “Read for 30 minutes” could later be adjusted to “Read 2 chapters” without starting over.

This feature would make habit management more flexible and user-friendly.

It was mentioned in another post that changing a unit is only possible when the units are interchangeable, such as hours and minutes. However, a habit I have created with the unit set to “minutes”, and when attempting to edit it to change the unit to hours, that option was not available — the only selectable unit remained minutes.

Hello! Thank you for your feedback.

Did you create this habit from the pre-built template? A permanent list of units is set for each template so it may be limited when you change the unit even if you want to change a new one with the same type.

We will highlight this to the team when they work on the improvement for this part. Meanwhile, you may consider to create a new habit with Custom option. You can choose the habit type and later flexibly switch between the units with the same type.

Regarding the habit, i did not use the pre-builts ones and created a custom habit!

Hi Franky! Thanks for your update. I can see it now. I will work further with the team to check.

Meanwhile, as I also tested, you may use the Meditate template to create habits to track duration. It lets you flexibly change between minutes and hours.

First off… I’m digging into the app and really loving the whole UX overall!

But this Feature Request is more of an oversight of something that should have been added at the beginning.

This has become an issue that’s affected me several times as I’m a new user and adding habits and am not sure the best way to track them. i.e. I have one habit that has a goal of 18 minutes a day… but I want to checkin with my progress at 10 distinct times during the day. Intuitively (so i thought) I chose minutes to manage this habit, but quickly realized that the “times” method of tracking was a better UX for me. However this was something that caught me off guard…

The UI is different when you choose a goal Unit of times vs. mins…

      # times per period → will provide user with a [+ 1] button to add increments representing the number of times you’ve done the goal.

      # min per period → will provide user with a [⏱️ Timer] button and UI to assist in accomplishing your timed goal.

I recognize that these tracking units might not be compatible… but consider that if someone needs to change the tracking unit… they will usually realize this early on… just as a new habit has been created and they quickly realize the selected method of tracking is not ideal.

So a simple resolution for this is to allow the tracking unit types to be changed, but with a critical modal or extra step that tells the user that in order to change the unit type, all past tracked data will be lost. I would click YES to that, in a heartbeat!

The alternative we’re faced with right now is… Rebuild the entire task!!! and for me that includes manually addding again… TEN different reminders to go off throughout the day… and I think we can all agree that this is a horrible user experience.

Also consider this feature request as another interim solution… If we had the ability to

DUPLICATE HABITS (see existing feature request) and immediately throw us into the initial habit creation flow, it could allow us to change the tracking unit type… save… and VOILA!

    Making reworking habits easier

For example if I want to create an habit of meditating and I choose to do it 1 time a day, there is for some reason no option to switch to the timer method. So I have to delete the habit, to then change the tracking method afterwards.

      Hi!

In this case, you change the unit type for the progress value measurement.

However, different types of units can make it difficult to generate an overall progress report.

You cannot make chart for value in different units, right?

So that's why it requires to create a new habit for the tracking with new type of unit.

Simple solution to the concern you raised @Minh Thư …

If the user wants to change the goal unit type… provide a warning modal that informs them that all habit tracking data will be lost/reset… then you you clear the tracking data and they can start afresh, using the new unit.

Alternative solution… allow user to DUPLICATE HABIT, and put them directly into the flow of new habit creation… where they can select a different unit before they finish setting up the new duplicated habit.
