Progress: Logic to calculate daily completion rate on weekly/monthly habits

Hi,

I’ve noticed that my overall metric rarely goes above 14%. I believe this is because I have several habits that are tracked monthly, and these are currently being counted in the overall daily metric.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for the overall rating to reflect only the habits set on a daily basis? I’m not entirely sure how best to implement this, because if I happen to check off a few monthly habits on the same day as my daily ones, that could disproportionately inflate the metric.

Maybe it would be worth considering two separate overall metrics — one for daily habits and another for the total (daily + monthly). Right now, the overall score doesn’t reflect my actual consistency in a meaningful way.

Hope this suggestion makes sense

    Hi Rui!

Thank you so much for your sharing.

The completion rate is currently calculating your action on habits daily. It is true when your habit is a daily one. However for weekly & monthly habits, I understand that it should be a progressive calculation instead.

I think it worths consideration. I definitely will highlight it to the team when we are planning the improvement on progress view.

I’m not sure if the habits are being calculated on a daily basis. I tested it by checking off all my daily habits, but the overall metric only reaches around 45%. Shouldn’t it be 100% in that case?

      Or am I missing something?

Either way, it might be useful to have an option to include or exclude certain habits from the overall metric (perhaps within each habit’s settings).

As mentioned earlier, another alternative could be to separate weekly and monthly habits from the daily metric, so the calculation reflects daily performance more accurately.

I hope this helps achieving a better overall metric

Hi Rui! Sorry for not making it clear.

The calculation is daily-based, it means it counts your check-in to the completion rate when you complete a daily habit, or have at least 1 progress log on weekly & monthly habits.

We appreciate your feedback and will take it to the team!

This is a big issue for me. I have a habit which I’ve set to be completed 6 times per week. Last week I completed all of my daily habits on most days, and completed this habit 5 times.

However, when I looked at my progress, the highest overall completion per day was only 75%! It’s very demotivating to complete nearly everything and get only 75% completion.

My suggestion would be that, for weekly or monthly tasks, you allow partial completion to count towards progress.

    Suggested logic:

Doing habit 6 times out of 6 is 100% completion. Each instance of that habit over the week is an equal percentage of that 100%, which can be assigned to the day it was completed on.

So, if I finished all of my daily habits on every day in the week, and only 5 of 6 weekly habits that week, my completion for the week would be 83.3% recurring (assuming 100% divided by 6 is 16.6666% per habit)

For each day the habit is completed, that 16.666% would be added to the day’s progress for each instance of the habit - on top of the completion rate for the daily habits (and minus that for the other weekly or monthly habits).

So, on any given day, if I completed one of the 6 instances of that habit, my 75% baseline of completing all the daily habits would be increased to 91.666%.

If I completed more than one of the 6 habits in a given day, the 16.666% would stack and could exceed 100%. This is logically sound, if we assume that weekly or monthly habits are distributed equally across the period they are tracked for. Therefore any repetition of a weekly habit in a given day is more than 100% of that day’s goals.

As it stands, a weekly habit with one single instance missed seems to be logged as zero progress. While this makes sense for a daily task, like ‘make dinner’, where the habit is either done or not done. It doesn’t make sense for a weekly or monthly habit where the user could have literally done 99% of their habit intentions (or 29 out of 30 times!) and yet receive absolutely no progress for it.

Thank you so much for your sharing! I can see the painpoint clearly. I defintely highlight this to the team when it comes to sprint when we plan for the progress report improvement.

Thank you! I hope this helps.

Just imagine we’re all here desperately checking our progress to get our dopamine fix each week, and getting disappointed at the low numbers. 😆

Also, if you do make these changes, it seems logical to make them retrospective. Otherwise it will be impossible to usefully compare progress from before and after the update.

*also: I believe this is because I have several habits that are tracked weekly

I left a comment on another ticket for this problem, then realised it was a much less upvoted ticket:

    https://feedback.habitify.me/p/suggestion-for-improvement-overall-metric-logic/comment/6875213a965863cd6bc91439

It’s a detailed suggestion for keeping track of progress per week / month without needing to simply exclude all that progress from the totals.

    Daily Progress

Right now if i accomplish all my daily goals it show 70 % …why? Because its counting my weekly goals as zero.

This calculation should be changed to track daily, weekly/ and monthly goals with a separate progress .

For example of all my dial goals are met on monday and tuesday it should show 100% on each day.

Let say then say you have a separate tracker for weekly goals. If working out 2 times a week i did one workoit monday and reading 2 time a week i did tuesday once the separate weekly progress tracker should show 50 %

    Hi!

We recently revamped the Progress view. In this update:

    • we excluded the completion of weekly/monthly/yearly habits from the daily completion rate

    • instead, we added section “Goals”, where you can see the completion rate on each of your weekly/monthly/yearly habits.

I hope you like these update!
